Production of Isamu Noguchi's Akari lamps started after a 1951 visit to Gifu, Japan a town known for their production of traditional lanterns and umbrellas. Noguchi's adapted these methods and materials (bamboo and mulberry paper) for the Akari series. This rare example is model Akari 30DD with base BB1. In addition to the slightly smaller and less common BB1 base the pull chain is accented by an original spherical cork pull that mimics the shape of the shade. This lamp dates from approximately the 1950s.
