A Gibert Rohde designed “Ectoplastic” desk for Herman Miller, circa 1940s. Rohde designed this desk as part of the Paldao Group, a furniture suite named for the distinct wood with contrasting grain that appears on the desktop. The unique design of the desk is one of the earliest examples of biomorphic design in the US, bringing into the spotlight "surrealist" furniture.
The desk features a curvilinear top which floats above three drawers (plus a pull out surface) and a cylindrical leg. The materials include: Paldao, acacia burl, imitation leather, and brass tacks.
This piece is in lovely original condition which a fair amount of light, general wear: cosmetic scratches and fading to the lacquer, some slight loss to the veneer, and some overall general light wear consistent with age and use. That said, the desk still presents and functions beautifully and is perfectly suitable for use as is.
