An incredibly unique, uncommon and large studio craft chair by California craftsman John Bauer. This early example was made sometime in the 1970s. At nearly 4 feet tall, it is equal parts chair and sculpture. Details abound. On the front of the chair are two intertwined snakes surrounding a lone eagle and an abalone star. Notice how Bauer uses the stripey grain of the wood to mimic stripes around the eagle. Below the eagle and snakes is a highly sculpted seat and curled legs, both stylistically showing clear asian influence. On the backside of the chair is a couple having intercourse, with the man touching the exact chair. The white droplet most likely represents the "fertility seed". Below the fertility scene, the back of the chair boasts a large phallus and abs. Everywhere you look, there is extraordinary detail. The chair has been refinished and is in excellent vintage condition. There are some old repaired splits and cracks which have been restored and are super solid. It is ready to be placed in a high end interior. This piece can be used as an everyday chair, or can be placed in a foyer or living space as a large sculpture which will undoubtedly catch anybody's and everybody's attention. A true conversation piece.

Dimensions: 32"W x 22.5"D x 44"H  Seat Height: 18"

Condition Notes: Excellent restored vintage condition. Highly solid and sturdy. Some small visible repairs throughout, which really just make it look old and add character. Beautiful gleaming patina front top to bottom.
