Tove & Edvard Kindt Larsen "Fireplace" chair designed in 1939 and produced by Gustav Bertelsen. This example is from the 1940s. This important chair, created to sit in a den in front of an open fireplace, was first exhibited at the Copenhagen Cabinetmaker’s Guild Exhibition in 1939 where it was immediately hailed as a masterpiece of modern design. It was a structural innovation, and its method of design has been repeatedly adapted by other designers ever since. The separation of the upholstered seat from the wooden frame, the distinctive x-shaped cross bar under the seat and the unique shape of the top of the arm, set this chair aside from anything that had come before. The fireplace chair is in the permanent collection of the Danish Museum of Art and Design, Copenhagen.
