This striking cabinet was conceived by the Belgian designer Willy Van Der Meeren for Tubax, in 1952. This early example is constructed of lacquered plywood, mahogany, and metal. The front is adorned with two large sliding doors, one a muted blue tone and the other chalk white. Each door has a large, beautifully sculpted, mahogany handle which allows you to smoothly slide the door open and closed. The sides of the cabinet are graced with a lovely mahogany veneer, gently faded and aged to perfection.

The interior of the cabinet is divided into two vertical spaces. The right side has three metal shelves, perfect for storing clothing, books, games, whatever. The left side of the cabinet has a hanging rod for hanging jackets or clothing, or for tall items.

This piece would be wonderful in an entryway, for hanging coats and storing shoes, or in a bedroom for extra clothing. You could even put it in a powder room for robes and towels, or, hell, plant it in your kitchen for your 200 pieces of Tupperware and a vacuum cleaner. The sky is the limit.

It's rare to find these cabinets in the US, especially one of this caliber, and in stunning original condition. This beauty was gently loved its whole life, and shows perfect, even patina throughout, without any serious flaws whatsoever--there is the occasional small nominal scratch or cosmetic imperfection here and there, but overall its really just fantastic. If you don't want to shell out $100,000 for a Jean Prouve, this is a very good alternative.
