This exceptional wall mirror came out of a Frances Elkins designed San Francisco interior from 1952. The entire living space featured a superb array of Elkins sourced pieces including ceiling lamps, mirrors, console tables, a dining set, a large sofa and lounge chair, and table lamps. This fabulous piece hung on the wall in the foyer. The mirror is made of cast plaster and features sculptural, scalloped edges and sinuous curving details. The malleable, ribbon-like movement brings the piece to life creating a three-dimensional trompe l'oeil aesthetic. The design screams Giacometti/Jean Michel Frank, though we have been unable to find another example of this design. This is a true one-of-a-kind piece.
The plaster has developed a beautiful, even yellowed patina over the years which adds to its charm and warmth. It is in immaculate vintage condition without any cracks or chips.
While this piece can only be heavily attributed to Elkins, we feel very confident in our assessment. Some of the pieces from this estate can be seen in other documented Elkins interiors including the home of David Adler (1941), the Clairmont Country Club (1947), as well as the collection of Katherine Elkins Boyd (Francis Elkins' daughter) who had another identical mirror from this collection. This information, in combination with the time period of the pieces and the location of the interior, as well as the quality and variety of the items, gives us a very confident opinion that these are in fact original Elkins pieces.
