This outstanding sofa came out of a 1952 San Francisco interior designed by Francis Elkins. This substantial piece features top-quality heirloom construction with a solid hardwood frame and hand tied springs. Three chunky, black lacquered block feet support the front of the sofa, with three smaller curved feet in the back, also in with the same black lacquered finish. The sofa features an integrated back cushion with four loose feather down seat cushions for superior comfort. The sofa has been meticulously reupholstered in a warm, golden wheat natural silk fabric with subtle striations. We salvaged as much of the original fabric as possible and used it to create four feather down back conditions. These feature the original floral patterned waxed canvas fabric on the front, with a mossy green velvet on the backside and piping. The black lacquered feet have been left completely original and contrast beautifully against the golden wheat colored silk. This sofa is in immaculate restored condition and will last for generations. It is incredibly heavy and solid.
While this piece can only be heavily attributed to Elkins, we feel very confident in our assessment. Some of the pieces from this estate can be seen in other documented Elkins interiors including the home of David Adler (1941), the Clairmont Country Club (1947), as well as the collection of Katherine Elkins Boyd (Francis Elkins' daughter) who had an identical mirror from this collection in her home. This information, in combination with the time period of the pieces and the location of the interior, as well as the quality and variety of the items, gives us a very confident opinion that these are in fact original Elkins pieces.
