An exceptional pair of console tables from a 1952 San Francisco interior by Frances Elkins. The ornately sculptured consoles, executed in plaster, feature scrolled intertwining leaves with elaborate details. The backside of the consoles, which could also be used as the front, feature a stunning, organic, freeform design which has a much more modern aura. Up close, the plaster has a wonderful speckled appearance with small, dark inclusions throughout.
The consoles are in wonderful original vintage condition. They have acquired a light, even "yellowed" patina over the years which only adds to the charm. There are some very minor imperfections to the plaster here and there, though nothing distracting, and overall they present beautifully. They are very heavy, solid, and sturdy.
While these pieces can only be heavily attributed to Elkins, we feel very confident in our assessment. Some of the pieces from this estate can be seen in other documented Elkins interiors including the home of David Adler (1941), the Clairmont Country Club (1947), as well as the collection of Katherine Elkins Boyd (Francis Elkins' daughter) who had an identical mirror from this collection in her home. This information, in combination with the time period of the pieces and the location of the interior, as well as the quality and variety of the items, gives us a very confident opinion that these are in fact original Elkins pieces.
